Dr. Kim Tan-MacNeill
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction, as well as the presence of repetitive, restricted, and stereotyped behaviours.
ASD is an umbrella term that includes a broad spectrum of behaviours and symptoms, including high-functioning Autism and Asperger's Disorder. Approximately 1 out of every 50 Canadian children have a diagnosis of ASD (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2019). ASD is more common in boys, however ASD symptoms can be very subtle in girls and young women and easily be missed.

A thorough ASD diagnostic assessment includes:
-
a comprehensive diagnostic interview with parents/caregivers
-
questionnaires filled out by parents/caregivers and a teacher who knows the child/youth well
-
the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) which is directly administered with the child/youth.
-
Additional interviewing/questionnaires to rule in or out other mental health and ADHD may be needed depending on the referral question.
-
A full psychoeducational assessment may also be recommended depending on the referral question (e.g., if the child also has learning difficulties).

ASD assessments are available for children and teens aged 6-16.

*Note: if only an ASD assessment is required without a psychoeducational component, Dr. Tan-MacNeill is able to offer assessment for older teens/young adults. Please contact her for more information.

Self-referrals are accepted. While physician's referrals are not required, your insurance provider may require you to have a physician's referral for coverage.
