Psychoeducational Assessments

Does your child/teen struggle with math, reading or writing?

Are they behind grade level, but no one can figure out why?

Or do they seem to be way ahead of the rest of their classmates in certain subjects?

Psychoeducational Assessments help parents and children/teens understand their learning style and show whether or not a Learning Disorder is present. They can also test for giftedness. When children seem to be very far behind grade level, they can test for intellectual disabilities. Schools usually require psychoeducational assessment results to provide accommodations to students, such as Individualized Education/Program Plans (IEPs or IPPs).

These assessments are most useful from Grade 3 onwards, when students have already learned the foundational skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic (the "3 R's").

A psychoeducational assessment is generally recommended as part of a complete ADHD assessment to ensure that no underlying learning difficulties are present and causing behaviours that look like ADHD (in the classroom, not paying attention can look a lot like not understanding ). Psychoeducational assessments also form a core piece of an assessment for intellectual disability (which requires additional measures of adaptive functioning).

Types of Psychoeducational Assessments Offered:

  • Psychoeducational assessment for learning disorders - to rule in or out specific learning disorders in reading, mathematics, and/or written expression

  • Psychoeducational assessment for giftedness

  • Psychoeducational assessment as part of a comprehensive assessment for intellectual disability (this requires additional measures of adaptive functioning)

  • Psychoeducational assessment as part of a comprehensive ADHD assessment - to ensure that no underlying learning difficulties are present and causing behaviours that look like ADHD (in the classroom, not paying attention and not understanding something can look like the same thing).

What does a "psychoed" involve?
  • interview with parents/caregivers

  • in-depth questionnaires for parents/caregivers

  • in-depth questionnaires for a teacher who knows the child/teen well

  • review of report cards / school adaptations

  • direct testing with the child/youth: activities that explore cognitive abilities, memory, learning, and reading/writing/mathematics ability

Psychoeducational assessments are available for children and teens aged 6-16 years old.

Self-referrals are accepted. While physician's referrals are not required, your insurance provider may require you to have a physician's referral for coverage.
