Therapy for Neurodiverse Children and Youth

Colorful Pop It Fidget
Neurodiverse children and teens generally have a neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosis, most commonly Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Children, teens, and young adults on the neurodiversity spectrum often experience many more challenges than their peers. This can range from feeling like they don't fit in and having low self-esteem to serious mental health concerns like anxiety and depression. In fact, some research has found that almost 40% of children with ASD also have an anxiety disorder! Young neurodiverse children can have big emotions and big behaviours which parents wonder how to handle.  Neurodiverse youth also tend to have more sleep problems (and we all know what not enough sleep does!).

Dr. Kim specializes in adapting evidence-based therapies to meet the needs of neurodiverse youth, especially for diagnoses of ADHD and Autism. In fact, she did her PhD research on how to adapt interventions to make them more suitable for families of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. If your child has a diagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder and is also experiencing any of the following concerns, then Dr. Kim may be a good fit for them:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Stress

  • Low self-esteem

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Disruptive behaviour

  • Sleep problems

  • Tics / Tourette Syndrome

  • Grief

  • Difficulty accepting their diagnosis
